Deer Protection Recommendations

As most residents probably know there are plenty of deer in our area, and they can be damaging to young trees, so we recommend that the trees be protected during at least the first few years of their growth. We are providing a variety of trees of various sizes and forms, so the type of protection needed is not consistent across all species. Also, some residents may not have deer pressure if their yard is fenced. Due to these two factors, we are not providing deer protection with the trees. We highly recommend residents have a plan for protecting their tree. Below are photos of options, and links for where items can be purchased.

For wide trees chicken wire or wire mesh like pictured below can be installed. Supplies can be purchased at local gardening centers such as The Rhoads Garden in North Wales and Primex in Glenside, or the big box retailers. A roll of chicken wire can be shared among a few neighbors.

More details about all species, including noteworthy characteristics, uses, more details on ideal growing conditions and culture, and photos, can be found in the pdf document listed below. We will do our best to ensure you get your preferred tree or shrub, but the registration form does have a place for you to indicate any other species that could work for you, if your first choice ends up not being available.
