Park Projects
Ingersoll Park Concession Stand and Press Box
Ingersoll Park has a new concession stand! Our Public Works Department removed the old snack stand and it was replaced with a new building that includes concession space, a press box, and public restrooms. The new building was part of the 2023 master plan for Ingersoll Park and is ready for Lower Gwynedd Little League’s 2026 opening day, with minor weather-dependent finishing work to be completed this spring. This project was funded by an $830,000 state Economic/Community Development grant secured with the help of State Senator Maria Collett, a $700,000 state Local Share Act grant secured with the help of State Representative Liz Hanbidge, and a $59,000 state Small Water and Sewer grant for infrastructure. Lower Gwynedd Little League also will install a new batting cage as part of these overall improvements.
Road and Trail Projects
Old Bethlehem Pike Bridge Replacement and Willow Run Streambank Restoration
Replacement of the deteriorated bridge on Old Bethlehem Pike is almost complete. Located behind the Township Building, the bridge over Willow Run was removed and replaced with a ne pre-cast concrete arch bridge. The Township was awarded a state Local Share Account grant of $786,000 to fund most of the project. As the bridge work finishes up, the Township will start a planned restoration of the streambank near the bridge, which is funded by a $100,000 state Watershed Restoration and Protection Program grant and a $59,000 grant from Montgomery County.
Welsh Road & Darden Ave / Welsh Road & Evans Road Traffic Signal Upgrades
This project will improve traffic flow at these two intersections near Route 309 and Gwynedd Crossing Shopping Center by upgrading the traffic signals to better detect and manage traffic volume. The Township was awarded a state Green Light Go grant of $451,312 to fund most of the project. The Township will start the bidding process in spring 2026. Because of long lead times to acquire material, work is not expected to be completed until 2027.
Penllyn Pike and Trewellyn Avenue/Old Penllyn Pike Traffic Signal Modernization
This project will make the intersection more ADA- and pedestrian-friendly, modernize the traffic signal and improve signal timing. The Township was awarded a state Local Share Account grant of $324,640 to fund most of the project. Design and permitting is almost complete. The Township will be ready to go to bid for construction in late spring/early summer 2026. Because of long lead times to acquire material, work is not expected to be completed until 2027.
Penllyn Station Trail
This new trail, which was part of the 2023 park and trail master plans, will provide a pedestrian connection from Penllyn Train Station to Pen-Ambler Park and Ambler Yards (and from there to
Ambler Borough). The trail is in the design and permitting stage. Construction is expected to start in 2027. The Township was awarded a state DCED Multimodal Transportation Fund grant of $245,186 and a MontCo 2040 grant of $250,000 to fund this important link in Lower Gwynedd’s sidewalk & trail network
Stormwater Management Projects
Brookside Avenue/Houston Creek Flood Study
The Township completed this flood study in 2023. Since then, our Public Works Department has regraded portions of Knight Road to better direct stormwater runoff into inlets and storm pipes. A new culvert on a Marion Avenue property will replace an undersized culvert that causes the creek to back up and flood in heavy storms. Combining the efforts of Public Works staff and an outside contractor, the Marion Avenue culvert will be replaced in 2026. The Township was awarded a $66,471 MontCo 2040 grant to fund most of the cost of the culvert replacement.
Penllyn Flood Study
The Township was awarded a state Flood Mitigation Program grant of $27,200 to fund most of the cost of this study to study part of Willow Run and Wissahickon Creek and identify projects that would reduce the rate and volume of stormwater runoff impacting residences in the Penllyn neighborhood. The Township Engineer, Gilmore & Associates, is working on the study and will hold a community meeting in late spring/early summer 2026.
